CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF BUSINESS ISSUES
Culture represents one of the biggest 'unknown unknowns' for many businesses. Yet countless commercial issues and organisational failures, stem from cultural differences. For example different notions of the role and use of contracts, preferences for level of detail required to progress a project, processes for decision making, ideas about quality and employees’ preferences for autonomy and leadership, to name just a few.
And in a country like Australia, which is increasingly ethnically diverse and utilising the talents of women and older workers, companies also need to adapt to the diverse cultural needs of domestic customers and employees.
If we are unaware of these cultural differences then we are unaware of potential risks, solutions and opportunities and waste time, effort and resources, attempting to force our own world view or fix the wrong problem.
